After setting up a website, traffic management tools allow us to monitor visitor data. By analyzing and interpreting daily traffic fluctuations, we can investigate the underlying influences and subsequently improve or adjust the website.

Here are some common reasons that cause abnormal traffic fluctuations:

Reason 1: The Beginning and End of Public Holidays

The first reason for abnormal traffic changes is simple: different public holidays throughout the year. Typically, there is a noticeable downward and upward trend in website traffic during the start and end of public holidays.

Reason 2: Industry Off-seasons and Peak Seasons

The impact of public holidays and when it begins varies across different industries. For example, for most websites, traffic changes during the Lunar New Year start on the first day of the holiday; however, for websites selling travel services, flight tickets, or train tickets, this period may begin much earlier because the Lunar New Year is a peak sales season for these industries.

Therefore, annual sales cycles (peak and off-peak seasons) also influence website traffic. These changes are usually regular and become more apparent over the long term.

Reason 3: The Start and End of Marketing Campaigns

E-commerce websites rely on marketing promotions to attract traffic. Typically, traffic rises significantly once a campaign begins and returns to baseline levels once it ends. You can use these traffic changes to evaluate the effectiveness of your marketing efforts.

Reason 4: Influence of Trending Topics

Trending topics can be divided into two categories: proactive and passive. Proactive trending topics are usually part of a marketing campaign—for example, collaborating with a YouTuber where traffic flows from their channel to your site. Passive trending topics are spontaneous or created by others, such as a hot news issue at the time. You can observe if a traffic change is caused by a trending topic by analyzing traffic sources, keywords, and the specific timing of the fluctuation.

Reason 5: Before and After Website or Page Adjustments

Website revamps, page optimization, and content updates modify the site structure, content, and layout, all of which can impact traffic.

Reason 6: Website Server Status

Beyond server-specific issues, this includes the operational status of other network equipment in the data center, such as switches, routers, power supply, and other force majeure factors. These factors can lead to unstable server performance, which in turn affects website traffic.

Reason 7: Adjustments to Website Analytics Tools

The final factor affecting website traffic data is the analytics tool itself. Taking Google Analytics as an example, any code adjustments or filter settings will affect the traffic data recorded by the analysis tool.
