Within hours of the conflict's start, government websites and media organizations on both sides were targeted by large-scale DDoS attacks. A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack is a method targeting network services where attackers send massive amounts of requests or traffic to a target site, exceeding its processing capacity and causing system paralysis. These attacks are typically organized by one or more hacker groups using various tools, including botnets, zombie hosts, and honeypots.
Following the outbreak of war, government and media bodies became primary targets. These attacks not only disrupt normal network operations but also risk the theft or corruption of sensitive data. For targeted organizations, it is critical to not only detect and block attacks in real-time but also to back up essential data to prevent loss.
In the Israel-Palestine conflict, cyberattacks have moved beyond merely restricting government websites; hackers are now attempting to disrupt war alert systems to generate false missile warnings. The goal of such attacks is to incite panic among the public, creating widespread chaos and despair.
Recently, the hacker group AnonGhost launched a series of DDoS attacks targeting Israeli infrastructure and APIs. They claimed to have successfully breached Israel’s 'Red Alert' missile warning platform, exploiting vulnerabilities to intercept data. Simultaneously, they sent mass spam emails to Israeli citizens containing fake missile attack warnings.
These cyber operations lead to the spread of false information, making it difficult for the public to distinguish truth from fiction amidst the panic. This situation can diminish the will to survive and lead to misunderstandings of others' actions.
To prevent DDoS attacks, several measures can be taken, including increasing bandwidth, deploying firewalls and Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), and performing network traffic analysis and filtering. Furthermore, organizations should strengthen education and training to raise security awareness among users and reduce vulnerabilities. Both enterprises and individuals must prioritize cybersecurity awareness and maintain a skeptical attitude toward received information to avoid being misled by malicious actors.
