INMETRO (The National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality) is Brazil's national oversight authority, primarily responsible for implementing national metrology and quality policy. The INMETRO mark under its administration is a mandatory mark targeting specific categories of products entering the Brazilian market—such as receptacles, medical devices, electronic and magnetic ballasts, voltage regulators, and hazardous-locations equipment—which must comply with the nationally prescribed safety testing and certification standards. In addition to complying with the Brazilian standards established by INMETRO, products must bear the mandatory INMETRO mark together with the mark of an accredited certification body, such as the UL-BR mark. Under INMETRO Ordinance No. 371, since July 1, 2011, all household appliances and related products covered by the IEC 60335 standard—such as electric kettles, heaters, blenders, hair dryers, and electric irons—must obtain mandatory INMETRO product safety certification before being sold on the market.
