India's BIS requires household appliances, IT/telecom, and other products to comply with BIS safety requirements before they may be imported. For any product falling within the Bureau of Indian Standards' list of 109 products subject to mandatory import certification, the foreign manufacturer or the Indian importer must first apply to the Bureau of Indian Standards for an import product certification certificate, on the basis of which customs releases the imported goods; products such as electric heating appliances, insulating and fire-resistant electrical materials, electricity meters, multi-purpose dry-cell batteries, and X-ray equipment are subject to mandatory certification. BIS certification is a product certification scheme for certain goods sold in India, designed to give consumers third-party assurance of product quality, safety, and reliability; certified products span nearly every industrial sector, including agricultural products, textiles, and electronics. The certification mark on a product signifies that the item conforms to the relevant Indian Standard.
